Cyd, the cicada, has just emerged from his nympho-exoskeleton and was posing on one of the brick planters that flank my front door. He's one of a 17-year cidaca horde that will be swarming my area of the northeastern US for the next four weeks. Here's a LINK to more information than you ever wanted to know about these lovely locusts.
The cool weather (20-30° warmer than it was on Thursday) will likely have a small impact on their emergence, which means that they will directly affect end-of-school-year activities, such as graduations. Interesting and somewhat cool at first, the cicadas will rapidly become a noisy nuisance that will end up crunching under foot and under tires.
For what it's worth, I am contemplating ways that I might be able to preserve a few since their wings are sheer and rather cool. I'm seriously contemplating spray painting a few of them silver or dipping 'em in UTEE. What do you think???
This guy's many friends were extremely noisy down in Virginia last week but we didn't see that many of them!
