Tutorial: Crayon Resist Post-It Note Book

Note on my "Inspiration":
I saw this technique a while back and filed it in my brain. My daughter got some Kat Von D makeup from Sephora and I fell in love with the packaging. It's white roses on black and very striking. I immediately thought of the Rose & the Skull with Rose BombShell Stamps then remembered the Crayon Resist technique, which I thought would work for it!

Supplies:
Skull with Rose from the Man's Ruin Set by Bombshell Stamps
Rose from the Love & Luck Set by Bombshell Stamps
Glossy Cardstock by Ranger
Jet Black StazOn Ink by Tsukineko
Black Soot, Fired Brick, Worn Lipstick, Broken China, Faded Jean Distress Inks by Ranger
Van Dyke Brown Ink by Ranger
Silver and/or White Crayons by Crayola
Cardstock by Bazzill (you'll want to use thick, heavy cardstock)
Patterned Papers by Making Memories, Scenic Route, & EK Success
Silver Foil Stickers from Holland that I got at a seriously cool booth at a stamp show.
Stickles Glitter Glue
Sponges (I buy round ones and then cut them up into wedges. I'm cheap, but not easy.)
Tissues
Post It Note pads that were clearanced at Michael's (2 for 50¢--yay).
Red-Liner Tape

Instructions:
1. Stamp the rose and the rose with skull onto two 4" square pieces of Glossy Cardstock using StazOn ink.

2. Color the images with Silver crayon. You can go over the lines within the image, but try not to go outside of the lines on the exterior of the image. It's a bit difficult because the darned crayons don't sharpen real well.

3. Using a sponge and the Black Soot Distress Ink, dab ink all over image and cardstock until you have the coverage you'd like.

4. If you'd like, add a second color of Distress Ink using the sponge to dab it on til you're happy.

5. Take a tissue and rub the ink and crayon off of the image. You might have to rub fairly hard, but the image will eventually become white again.

6. Construct your Post-it Note holder by cutting a piece of cardstock 1/4" wider than the Post It note and twice as long, plus an additional 1/4". I'm sure that wasn't at all clear, so I'll explain. My Post-It Note pads were 3.5" square. I cut the black cardstock to 3.75" wide and 7.75" tall. (2 x 3.75" + .25" for the fold). Score lines at 3.75" from either end, which will leave you a .25" "Spine".

7. Using patterned paper, decorate the covers of the Post-It note covers as you'd like.

8. Use red-liner tape, adhere the Post-It Note Pad to the interior of the book.

*If you'd like, you can add a magnet to the back of the book and hang it on your refrigerator. You can also increase the length by 1" and make a loop for a pencil.

Tah-Dah!

I did make a card to go with these, where I changed things up a bit. I need to take a photograph, so look it soon!

My Earth Day Challenge: Re-use Plastic!

My challenge to use is to re-purpose and/or use plastic in a card or tag.

I used a translucent plastic notebook divider to create this card. I stamped Kelly's Sleeping Fairy, Hearts Branch, Fairy Chicklet Right, and "Happy Birthday" Flourish on one side of the plastic using StazOn ink. I colored the reverse side with Copic markers. When the ink dried, I added Stickles to the fairy & chicklet's wings and edged the piece with gold metallic Krylon leafing pen. I added gold-painted chipboard corners, then popped the whole thing up on dimensional foam stickers on a card made from parchment-look cardstock.

You have until midnight tomorrow, April 23rd to complete my challenge (and all the other challenges). If you do my challenge, please link your creation/blog to this blog post by commenting below.

I will draw one winner who will receive either an Earth or a "Limited Edition" Al on Earth stamp.

That one winner will then be entered into the drawing for one of the grand prizes:

o One winner will receive $100 in Odd Bird Planet stamps

o One winner will receive $50 in Odd Bird Planet stamps

o Five winners will receive a 25% discount coupon when they place a Odd Bird Planet order.

Have fun with my challenge and thanks for visiting today!

Second Peek-A-Boo card!

I created a second card for this challenge because the idea popped into my head after reading a thread about appropriateness of artwork. Being me, certain parts of the thread rankled, so since I had the perfect images to play with, I went for it and discovered a new use for old 1/16" eyelets and gold floss. *wicked grin*

The image is from the Retro Cowgirls set by Bombshell stamps. Stamped images were sent to me by the lovely Nicole, who is Miss May Bombshell! Woo-hoo!

I created the swinging doors of a Western Saloon, which showed the hat, a bit of hair, and the cowboy boots of the Retro Cowgirl. The swinging doors were made with a cut-down and altered Tag die, attached with 1/16" eyelets on QuicKutz Hinges cut from my beloved (and dwindling) supply of gold Bling FiberMark paper. Yummy stuff that is! The doors swing open to show our lovely Retro Cowgirl, who was colored with Copic markers, with a touch of gold Spica pen to add some gold highlights to her tresses, and a Pentel Metallic Marker to add gold to the stars on her bodice, boots, and her spurs. I also added 1/16" eyelets and a bit of gold metallic floss for tassels. Accessories are always so important. A touch of naughtiness is also sometimes fun.

I copped out with the sentiment because I had too many other choices running through my head. They can always be added to the interior of the card.

The patterned paper is by Flair Designs and the "Celebrations" sentiment is an old epoxy sticker from Art Warehouse. I added two gold stars and a heart to the sentiment to jazz it up a tad.

Peek-A-Boo card!

I love challenges, don't you? There's a great one going on right now at the Bombshell Stamps forum at Paper Craft Planets. It's for a "Peek-A-Boo" card. There's a prize involved, so be sure to check it out! Also, if you register at that forum, you get 20% off your first Bombshell Stamps order, so it's definitely worth stopping by!

This challenge was fun because it took some time to figure out how to "engineer" the card and how to place all the elements. I decided to create an underwater scene that would be visible from the belowdeck portholes of a yacht or ship. It was especially challenging since I've never been on a cruise or on a yacht for that matter, though I did travel on a ferry between Hoek van Holland and Harwich. Our ferry "room" did NOT have portholes.

Anyways, the stamps are all Bombshell Stamps. I used these sets:
Mermaid Treasure: mermaid, fishes, treasure chest, and sea plants/weeds
Mermaid Anchor: rope
Ahoy Sailor: life-ring and anchor
Homeward Bound: "Sea You Soon"

I chose two-sided patterned paper from Cosmo Cricket because it was cardstock weight and had a wood-grained pattern on one side that I thought would work for the woodwork of a yacht. The "portholes" are FiberMark specialty paper, that was cut with a QuicKutz ring die. There's "glass", which was cut from remnants of a Hammermill Inkjet transparency. I used a "T" diecut as a hook to hang the very, very, abysmally poorly cut life ring. I must've flunked scissors in Kindergarten 500 years ago. How sad. :(

The underwater scene was stamped in Memento ink. The mermaid, treasure chest, rope, and anchors were colored with Copic markers. The "sand" is Distress ink and the "water" is stippled Nick Bantock ink. Nicole reminded me that I had neglected to say that I used Art Glitter for the "treasure". I wish I had added a bit of silver glitter as well, because the gold glitter fades into the "sand". IRL, the treasure is much glitterier. My scanner hates bling.

I used a ZipEMate die to cut the nameplate for the sentiment.

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter!

Are you shocked! Two posts within 12 hours of each other. Wowza!

Anyways, we were bad and ate our chocolate bunny a day early. It was a dark chocolate Dove bunny and boy was it good. Dark chocolate has anti-oxidants, so it was healthy for us, right? ;-D

Priscilla is up to her old antics, hiding in an Easter Egg in the hopes of snacking on some Easter chicks (Bonnie Chicklet, Chicklet Left, Chicklet Right, and Handsome Chicklet). Bad, bad kitty. I wonder if she's thinking, "So many chicks, so little time!"

The patterned paper is by Flair Designs and is a lovely pink in real life before it was attacked by my scanner which hates brads and jewels.

The stamped images were colored with Copic markers as was the grass. The sky is chalked. I punched a mask to create the egg, cut it in half rather jaggedly, and then outlined it.

I had "Happy Easter" ribbon from last year which is serving as the sentiment. The nameplate is Swirl Grungeboard which was painted with a metallic silver Dabber, then inked to match the shiny metallic black vellum mat. Yay for me using more stash.

Thanks for visiting my blog today and Happy Easter!

Ahoy There!

I really haven't been very good about updating my blog, but I will try to do better.

I forgot how much I enjoy making tags. I made this tag for the Tag challenge that's running concurrently with the "Peek-a-boo" challenge at the Bombshell Forum at Paper Craft Planet! You should check them both out, especially since you can win goodies! Goodies are good, right? :D

The tag uses the sailor girl and the sentiment from the "Ahoy Sailor" set by Bombshell Stamps. I colored the focal image with Copic markers then felt the need to shab it up with Distress Inks. The stars are colored with twinkly sparkly Spica pens. The bling just isn't showing and the colors are a bit off in this scan. I think that's because I have the focal image mounted on dimensional foam adhesive thingies, which confuses my scanner. The patterned paper is by Making Memories (on sale now at Michael's!), the cardstock is Core'Dinations, and the die cut banner is by QuicKutz. The ribbons are from my stash.

Neglected Supply Challenge!

Tiffany, one of the other justjohanna's Odd Bird Planeteers, and I were chatting online about all the scrap/stamp crap we've got and never/rarely used, so we decided to do a "Neglected Supply Challenge". It was due last Friday, but I do believe we've extended the challenge since there weren't that many takers. Tiffany has put up a prize, so you might want to participate. :)

The challenge is on the Odd Bird Planet's group at Paper Craft Planet. Boy, that's a lot of planets!

The neglected supplies I used were: Swirl-Embossed Grungeboard, Fragments, Paint Dabber, Crackle Accents, Sepia Accents, and scraps of patterned paper (Scarlet Letter and a really old partial sheet of Motifica or Sublime).

I also used OBP stamps Karrie's Molly Owl, Owl-Fred Big Owl, and Hello.

I coated the Grungeboard skull with Pearl Paint Dabber. When the paint dried, I used Distress inks (Black Soot & Tea Dye) to shab it up. Then I went over the whole thing with Crackle Accents and left it to dry while I went shopping.

The owls were colored with Copic markers and I used Spica pen to add a little bling to their eyes. The patterned paper was looking a bit flat, so I used Sepia Accents over the swirly patterns of the Motifica paper. Much better. I'll definitely do that again.

I stamped the sentiment on a leftover scrap of the Scarlet Letter paper, glued a tag Fragment over it, cut it out, and sanded off the excess.

The Grungeboard and Fragment made the card too thick to scan, plus the Crackle Accents are highly reflective which would have made the scan even worse. However, my photography (indoors at night) isn't going to win any awards. It looks much cooler in real life, especially the crackly look over the pearly white swirly Grungeboard.

Sadly, you'll have to take my word for that.
